A 2-hour-25-minute flight sounds easy until you add the airport drive, bag drop, passport control and the transfer to your hotel.

For most UK travellers, Mallorca is close enough for a short break. But the first and last day of the trip still need planning, especially if you’re flying with children, landing late or staying outside Palma.

Use the flight time checker above to compare typical direct flight times from UK airports to Palma de Mallorca Airport. Then use this guide to understand what those numbers mean in real travel time.

Is it quicker to fly from London?

Usually, yes.

London and southern UK airports tend to have the shortest direct flight times to Mallorca. Bristol, Gatwick, London City, Luton, Stansted and Heathrow are all commonly around the 2-hour-20 to 2-hour-30 mark.

From northern England and Scotland, the flight is still short, but the difference is noticeable. Manchester is usually around 2 hours 40 minutes, Newcastle is closer to 2 hours 50 minutes, and Edinburgh can be just over 3 hours.

That does not always mean a London airport is the better choice.

If you live near Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Newcastle, Glasgow or Edinburgh, the local direct flight may still save time overall. A slightly longer flight is often easier than a long drive to a London airport, an overnight hotel and a more complicated journey home.

Direct flights vs connecting flights

For most UK holidaymakers, a direct flight is the simplest way to get to Mallorca.

There are frequent direct flights from London and many regional UK airports during the main holiday season. Airlines such as easyJet, Jet2, TUI, Ryanair and British Airways operate direct flights to Palma de Mallorca from the UK, depending on the airport and travel date. Skyscanner lists several of these airlines among direct carriers to Palma.

A connecting flight usually only makes sense if:

Common connection points include Barcelona, Madrid, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Munich.

A connecting journey often takes 5 to 8 hours or more from first take-off to landing in Palma, depending on the stopover. A long gap between flights can make a cheap fare feel much less attractive.

How long does the whole journey really take?

The flight is only one part of the journey.

For a direct UK to Mallorca flight, a realistic door-to-hotel journey often looks like this:

StageTypical time
Travel to UK airport30 mins to 2+ hrs
Check-in, bag drop and security1.5 to 3 hrs
Direct flight to Mallorca2 hrs 20 mins to 3 hrs
Arrival, passport control and baggage reclaim30 to 75 mins
Transfer to hotel15 mins to 90+ mins

For many travellers, the full journey from home to hotel is closer to 5 to 7 hours, even when the flight itself is under 3 hours.

It can be longer in school holidays, on Saturday changeover days, with checked luggage, or if your hotel is in Alcúdia, Cala d’Or, Port de Sóller, Cala Millor or another resort away from Palma.

What affects the flight time?

Wind can change the flight time by a few minutes either way.

A tailwind may shorten the journey. A headwind can make the same route take longer, especially on the return leg to the UK.

Air traffic also matters. Palma is one of Spain’s busiest holiday airports in summer, and aircraft may spend extra time waiting to take off, landing or taxiing to the stand.

Airline schedules include some buffer. That is why two flights on the same route may show slightly different times, even when the aircraft and distance are similar.

What happens when you land at Palma de Mallorca Airport?

UK travellers arrive at Palma de Mallorca Airport, usually shown as PMI.

Palma Airport is about 8 kilometres from Palma city centre, with road access via the Ma-19 motorway. Spain’s official tourism site also notes that Line 1 connects the airport with Palma.

Unlike travellers arriving from Schengen countries, UK passport holders should allow time for border control. GOV.UK says British citizens can travel to Spain and other Schengen countries without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and Spanish border control may ask for documents such as a return ticket, proof of accommodation and proof of funds.

The EU Entry/Exit System is also being implemented across the Schengen area. GOV.UK advises that EES may add extra time at the border, especially on a traveller’s first visit after registration starts for them.

In normal conditions, allow around 30 to 75 minutes from landing to leaving the airport. Add more time if you have checked luggage, arrive during the summer rush or land at the same time as several UK flights.

Transfer times from Palma Airport to popular areas

Palma is the quickest option after landing.

A taxi or private transfer to central Palma can often take around 15 to 20 minutes in normal traffic. Resorts further from the capital need more planning.

AreaTypical transfer time from Palma Airport
PalmaAround 15–20 mins
Playa de Palma / Can PastillaAround 10–20 mins
Palmanova / MagalufAround 25–35 mins
Santa PonsaAround 30–40 mins
Port de SóllerAround 35–50 mins
Alcúdia / Port d’AlcúdiaAround 45–70 mins
Cala MillorAround 60–80 mins
Cala d’OrAround 60–90 mins

These are practical planning ranges, not fixed journey times. Traffic, hotel drop-offs, coach transfers and roadworks can all change the final number.

When are UK flights to Mallorca busiest?

The busiest periods usually follow the UK school holiday calendar.

Expect more pressure around May half-term, July, August, bank holiday weekends and October half-term. Saturday flights can also be busy because many package holidays and villa stays still run on weekly changeovers.

A busy airport does not always mean a longer flight. It does mean the rest of the journey can take longer.

Security queues, bag-drop desks, boarding gates, passport control and baggage reclaim all feel different in August than they do on a quiet weekday in April.

Is Mallorca good for a short break from the UK?

Yes, if you choose the flight times carefully.

A morning flight from London, Bristol, Birmingham or Manchester can get you to Mallorca early enough to use the first afternoon. A late evening arrival is different. By the time you pass border control, collect bags and reach the hotel, the first day may be gone.

For a 3-night trip, flight times matter more than the headline price.

A slightly more expensive morning flight can be better value than a cheap late-night departure that effectively turns the first night into a bed-only stop.

Tips before booking your UK to Mallorca flight

Check the arrival time first, not just the departure time. A 6 a.m. UK departure can be painful, but it may give you a proper first day on the island.

Compare your local airport with the nearest major hub. A London flight may be shorter in the air, but not if you need a 3-hour drive to get there.

Look closely at luggage. Some low-cost fares look cheap because they exclude cabin bags, checked luggage or seat selection.

Check whether the route is seasonal. Smaller UK airports may have strong summer schedules but fewer options in winter, spring or late autumn.

Allow more time for families. Pushchairs, car seats, snacks, toilet stops and tired children can easily add 30 minutes to each airport stage.

Quick summary

A direct flight from the UK to Mallorca usually takes around 2 hours 20 minutes to 3 hours.

From London, the flight is usually around 2 hours 25 to 2 hours 30 minutes. From Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Liverpool, it is usually around 2 hours 20 to 2 hours 40 minutes. From Scotland and the North East, it can be closer to 2 hours 50 minutes to just over 3 hours.

The full journey usually takes much longer than the flight time. For most UK travellers, 5 to 7 hours from home to hotel is a more realistic planning range.

Before booking, check three things: your airport’s direct flight time, your arrival time in Palma and the transfer time to your resort. That gives you a much better picture of how much of your first day in Mallorca you’ll actually get to use.
